If you follow a link off the site, the destination may set its own cookies. That is outside our control and covered by the policy of whoever runs it.

Turning them off

Every browser can block or clear cookies from its settings, usually under privacy or site data. Nothing on this site stops working if you do: there is no login to lose, no basket to empty and no preference stored anywhere that clearing cookies would throw away. Pages look and behave exactly the same with site data switched off entirely.

Why there are none

The site is built as a set of static pages, rebuilt in one piece whenever something changes. There is no advertising network to report back to, no session to keep and no personalisation to remember, so the usual reasons for setting a cookie do not arise. That also means no consent banner: a banner exists to collect permission for something, and here there is nothing to collect permission for.

Fonts and other files

Stylesheets, images and the site icon are served from this domain, not from a font or asset network, so loading a page does not tell anyone else that you did. Photographs are stored here as copies; the licence and author named in each caption link back to Wikimedia Commons, and that link is only followed if you click it.

If this changes

If the site ever does set a cookie of its own, this page will say which one, what it holds and how long it lasts, and the date at the top of the page will move. Questions go through Contact, and what we store more generally is on Privacy.
