Paid content

How Nets Daily News is paid for, where paid publications appear and what money cannot buy here.

In brief

Nets Daily News carries no display advertising, no ad network and no sponsored banners. What it does carry is a number of paid publications: articles on the Newsroom desk that a third party paid to have published. The money goes to the publisher, Moonrill Digital FZ-LLC, and helps pay for the basketball desks, the archive and the hosting that keeps both online.

Where paid pieces appear

Only on Newsroom. That desk is set apart from the basketball sections in the masthead, on every card and in the address of each piece, and a reader can always see which desk a page belongs to. The Nets, Opinion, NBA, Explainers, Numbers, History and Brooklyn desks are not for sale: no one can pay to place a story there, to change one, or to have a player, a team or a rival publication written about in a particular way.

What a buyer gets

A buyer pays for an article to be published on Newsroom with the text and the outbound links it was supplied with, at a permanent address. Once a piece is up, it is not rewritten after the fact and its links stay as they were. A buyer does not get a byline from our writers, a mention on the basketball desks, a place in our navigation beyond the Newsroom feed, or any say over what else the site publishes.

What payment does not change

A paid piece is not an endorsement. Publishing it does not mean that the publisher has tested a product, checked every claim in it or recommends the company behind it. The opinions and figures in a paid publication belong to whoever supplied it. Some of these pieces deal with regulated fields such as finance, property or gaming; whether a product described in them is lawful where you are, and whether it suits you, is for you to establish from the provider and the relevant authority, not from our page.

Outbound links in a paid publication may be the reason it was commissioned, and they point to sites outside our hands. Treat them as you would a link in any advertisement: look at where it goes before you hand over money or personal details. Links elsewhere on the site — to the league, to data sources and to Wikimedia Commons for photographs — are editorial and are not paid for.

Cookies and measurement

Paid pieces carry no tracking of their own from us. Every page on the site, paid or not, receives the same two visit cookies described on Cookies, and nothing more is added on account of a piece being paid for.

Why we spell this out

A sports site that also runs general news owes its readers a plain account of which pages are journalism and which are commerce. Readers come here for the Nets; a few of them will wander onto Newsroom from a search result or a shared link without ever seeing the rest of the site. This page exists so that any of them, arriving from anywhere, can find out in one place who paid for what. It is linked from the footer of every page and from our editorial policy, and it will be rewritten if the arrangement it describes ever changes — for example, if the site starts carrying display advertising or sponsorship on the basketball desks, which at present it does not.

Buying a placement

Requests to publish a paid piece go to the address below. We decline material that is unlawful, that impersonates a person or a newsroom, or that would be passed off as basketball reporting. Nothing about a commercial request reaches the people who write the basketball desks.
